Our Story

8 years ago we set our sights on opening a brewery, the big question was where? After giving it a tremendous amount of thought, we landed on the place we have all called home at one point or another – Cape Cod. Beer has been in our blood whether it was selling it, marketing it, making it or drinking it. To us, there is no better place to enjoy a cold one than on the shores of the most picturesque place on the planet. After forming the concept, we had one challenge – coming up with a name. It needed to be something that had a direct connection to our town, the lower Cape and the sea. After a paddleboard trip to the uninhabited Hog Island we knew we had found the place. Hog Island, located on Little Pleasant Bay in Orleans overlooks our famed Nauset Beach and the dune shacks that dot her coastline. It’s rumored that Captain Kidd buried treasure on the island, many have attempted to locate it – we feel we found it.

Cheers to liquid treasure!

Meet the Partners

Mike

MIKE MCNAMARA – FOUNDER & PRESIDENT

Mike has spent his entire career in the bev biz. He started in the craft world with Rhino Chasers out of Huntington Beach CA, during college. He then led teams for the largest winery and the two largest liquor companies in the world (in New England, California and the Pacific NW). His last corporate stint was GM/VP of Sales – On Premise in Washington State for the largest premium adult beverage distributor in the US. He’s proud to now be out of the rat race applying his experience to “his own craft”. Mike’s happy to call Cape Cod home with his wife and two children and loves the fact he’s only minutes from the ocean at any given time.

MAC GALLANT – OWNER

Mac was born and raised on Cape Cod. After spending countless days growing up on the beach, surfing, lifeguarding, hitting up beach parties and bonfires, he realized there wasn’t another place he’d rather spend the rest of his life; living and growing old with his wife Meredith, and two kids, Chase and Farrah.

After being unable to fulfill his dream of being a career Ocean Lifeguard, he navigated his way through multiple restaurants, bartending and managing from Plymouth to Wellfleet, until finally opening his first restaurant in 2012, Local Break, right down the street from his high school and Nauset Light Beach. A fortuitous meeting at one of his favorite restaurants, The Land Ho, happened on his way home from Local Break, where he met up with his friend Mike McNamara. Sharing a beer, the two discussed new business opportunities, where Mike invited Mac to explore a partnership with the newly established Hog Island Beer Co. Being a homebrewer and restaurant guy, Mac recognized the opportunity to become part of Mike’s newest creation, a local brewery, founded upon all things cape cod, from the beach life, to strong roots in the community, whose goal was to unite our friends, families, and co-workers, with delicious brews and positive vibes. Cheers!

Dave

DAVE MCCLEARY – OWNER

Dave comes to Hog Island from Texas with a passion for beer. When not at the brewery, he enjoys golf and attending every Alabama Football game with his wife and two daughters. Roll Tide!

Meet our Brewer

Taylor

TAYLOR HIRST – BREWER

Taylor is an Orleans native that spent his high school years as a Wrestler and Soccer player. He started his Hog Island Beer Co career as one of our favorite mixologists. After a move to the West Coast he came back to us ready to focus on the brewery side of life. He first became a sales rep and after mastering that skill became a brewer assistant. The only next logical step would be Head Brewer, Since taking over he has developed our top-selling Nauset Haze and the fun loving double IPA of the summer Dunebilly. We look forward to seeing what he has up his sleeve next.
